Leading goals for medical insurers are to control drug costs and
to reduce medical interventions caused by medication non-compliance.
Reducing non-compliance is a well-known attribute of physician dispensing.
Studies indicate non-compliance rates decrease by approximately
70% with physician dispensing. For this reason, many employers require
physician dispensing at occupational clinics.
Physician dispensing is also known to cut drug costs significantly
because doctors’ prescribing patterns simply become more cost
effective with the dispensing physicians’ increased awareness
of drug costs - and because there is greater profit associated with
dispensing lower priced generics than with brand medication.
