BIO: LUPE ONTIVEROS
Lupe Ontiveros is a well-known stage, television and screen actress as well as a producer and Community Activist.
She is best known for her comedic/dramatic role as La Nacha in the Oscar nominated film EL NORTE, for which she
gained international recognition.
Originally from El Paso , Texas , she began as an extra in 1972 and soon after, launched an impressive film career
as a “working actress” proudly portraying Latino mothers and maids.
Lupe’s stage work includes most notably the Los Angeles , New York , and film productions of Luis Valdez’ ZOOT SUIT,
where she created the role of Dolores, the first Chicana mother on the Broadway stage. ZOOT SUIT, the play, has been
recognized as an historical event on the New York Stage as A New American Play about Chicanos.
Her film credits include PICKING UP THE PIECES with Woody Allen directed by Alfonso Arau, BLESSED ART THOU directed
by Tim Disney, CHUCK AND BUCK, directed by Miguel Arteta, AS GOOD AS IT GETS with Jack Nicholson, directed by James
R. Brooks, THE BRAVE directed by Johnny Depp, MI FAMILIA, directed by Gregory Nava and SELENA, also directed by Gregory
Nava. Other credits to include GOONIES, BOUND BY HONOR, HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW I’M STILL ALIVE just
to name a few. Lupe also starred in an HBO feature REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES directed by Patricia Cardosa.
Her countless television credits include pilots and series regular appearances such as DUDLEY with Dudley Moore, and
PAULEY with Pauley Shore and VERONICA’S CLOSET for CBS, where she was a recurring Guest Star. In GREETINGS FROM
TUCSON, a pilot for Warner Brothers, she was a series regular for Big Ticket Productions. She just finished filming a movie

series, THE ADVENTURES OF MAYA AND MIGUEL.
As a producer, Lupe produced UNA VEZ AL ANO PARA TODA UNA VIDA, an award winning educational film in Spanish,
focusing on the need for awareness regarding breast cancer in Latinas.
After graduating from Texas Woman’s University, she worked for 15 years as a Social Worker in East Los Angeles and
Compton areas where she became involved as an activist on issues confronting women and education. In 2003 the
Domestic Violence and Abuse of Women issue prompted her to perform The Vagina Monologues with Jane Fonda,
Margo Kidder and Rosie Perez in order to raise funds for a women’s shelter facility in Florida . Lupe and her Associate
Enrique Pinerua have established a Development Consultant Service to assist corporate America fund non-profit
organizations providing services addressing these issues.
As a founding member of the Latino Theatre Company in Los Angeles , Lupe has dedicated her life towards affecting
change in the negative image of Latinos in the entertainment industry. By creating award winning, original theatrical
projects that enhance our existing cultural values and by educating theatre audiences to the Latino/Chicano experience,
her company has created the first Equity Theatre non-regional theatre in the nation. Through original works, such as AUGUST 29TH, HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW I’M STILL ALIVE, STONE WEDDING, LUMINARIAS, and DIMENTIA
the Latino Theatre Company has been able to address past and present social/political issues from the historical events
of the Chicano Movement to the present social/sexual evolution of the Latino Community.
Lupe’s work has gained the respect of her peers, as well as her community, through recognition awards for her efforts as an actress, pioneer, activist and visionary who has sought to affect change while maintaining her dignity as a woman.

Dear NALIPsters,
Many of you may be aware of my writing aspirations. And many of you may also have heard about one of my favorite feature scripts "Students Like Us". "Students Like Us" is an ensemble cast coming-of-age story in a college setting with a Latino perspective.
Our project is a low-budget, independent feature with a lot of heart. Almost everyone who has come aboard has done so out of an overwhelming affinity for the story and what it represents. Latinos in college? When is the last time you've seen a story about Latinos in college? Well, we're making one and we hope you look forward to seeing it!
These days are our last stretch of fund-raising and we need your help! That is why we are selling advance tickets to our Private Cast and Crew Premier Screening!!!!
Your contributions will help us pay actors, feed the crew and also rent equipment that we could not otherwise afford. This additional equipment will give us a more professional look and that will help us get it into festivals and accomplish our ultimate goal, which is to share OUR story.
Attached and also below is a donation form which you can either print and mail back to us OR you may use Pay Pal with the links below:

Havana lensed Love & Suicide to screen at a The American Black Film Festival.
Love & Suicide, the first all U.S. made narrative feature shot in Cuba since 1959, is set to screen in Miami Beach at the American Black Film Festival July 13-16, 2005 . The film is directed by Lisa France (known for her debut film, Anne B. Real, which was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards), and A Luis Moro Production with LAB 601 and Lightstone Entertainment.
Based on true events, the narrative follows Tomas (Kamar de los Reyes) on a journey to Cuba to find the one thing between love and suicide. While there he encounters Nina (Daisy McCrackin) a world traveling gypsy flower child and Alberto (Luis Moro) a native Cuban taxi driver. In Havana , Tomas discovers a world of history preserved in time. Alberto's simple life and philosophy, represents peace, clarity and family values for Tomas, forcing him to slow down and listen to himself. Tomas finally begins to hear the revolution within him, at the moment when he decides to choose between love and suicide.
The film was shot in twelve days in December 2003. How did an American crew shoot a feature in Cuba ? Easy, Moro submitted Anne B. Real into the Havana International Film Festival. "We went to Cuba legally from JFK airport in NY and came back to the Miami International Airport ," Moro recalls. "We walked in with a camera and a couple of wireless mics and started to roll. We shot in hotels, bars and on the streets. It was completely safe." "It's the ultimate indie film, everyone paid for themselves." adds France .
Love and Suicide will screen on Thursday July 14th at 2:30 PM and again on Saturday July 16th at 12:00 PM at the Regal Cinemas South Beach 18, 1100 Lincoln Rd , Miami Beach , FL 33139 . LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2005) – Documentary film producer Phillip Rodriguez has been named a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Justice and Journalism at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication.
As Senior Fellow for Documentary Filmmaking, Rodriguez will collaborate with other Justice and Journalism fellows on films and other projects exploring criminal justice, issues of race and ethnicity, post-9/11 security and liberty, the U.S.-Mexican border and immigration, said Steve Montiel, director of USC Annenberg's Institute for Justice and Journalism.
Created in the year 2000 with Ford Foundation funding, the Institute supports in-depth journalism about justice and injustice through professional fellowships and partnerships with other journalistic organizations and institutions of higher learning.
Rodriguez is founder of City Projects Productions. He describes his most recent documentary, Los Angeles Now, as an "evocation of Los Angeles at the end of its Anglo Century." TV Guide described the hi-def PBS documentary as an "edgy, atmospheric (but essentially optimistic) piece of urban pulse taking."
Other works by Rodriguez include a previous PBS project, Mixed Feelings: San Diego/Tijuana, which offers a new look at distant neighbors, and Manuel Ocampo: God is My Copilot, featuring Dennis Hopper and Julian Schnabel, in a reconsideration of multiculturalism in the contemporary art world. Another documentary, Pancho Villa & Other Stories won an award for best documentary at the 2000 San Antonio Cinefestival.
Rodriguez' endeavors are not limited to film. He wrote the story and title song for the Grammy-nominated "Papa's Dream" by Los Lobos. He also founded, published and edited Avance, a national Latino magazine of arts and culture.
Rodriguez is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and has an M.A. in Latin American Studies and an M.F.A. in Film and Television from UCLA. He also studied Art History and Spanish Literature at Universidad Cumplutense de Madrid. He is a former Senior Research Fellow at The Center for the Study of Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University .

The person must have had experience working on low budget movies, also needs to know all paperwork including SAG and have own computer & cell phone. The movie starts shooting July 25th. I will start interviewing at the end of this week, & decide by mid next week at the latest.
To submit, you must say you heard about this from Jeff Gund, and email your resume to:
