Publicizing Your Instant Web Site
Now that you've gone to all the work to make a nifty web site, you want lots of
people to visit it. To do this, you need to publicize your site.
There are many places that list web sites, but
all of them vary, so it is important to publicize your
site with a number of the largest ones.
There are basically two types of services that keep track of web sites.
- First are sites that keep large indexes of all the sites they know about, usually
categorized by topic. You need to publicize with each of these sites. Be aware
that some of these sites will take any registration, and some are picky and
only put up some of the registrations they receive.
- Second are web crawlers. These crawl around the web, searching for
sites, adding new ones to their lists. These crawlers
categorize sites in many different ways, but usually they use the title, the main header and sometimes by the first paragraph on the homepage.
Its likely that the web crawlers may find your site, but then again, they may
not, so its a good idea to tell the main crawlers about your site.
Now a note on Internet Etiquette:
Most of these services are free, provided by various companies
and individuals to improve the entire net . Please do not abuse these services.
Only publicize your site in the appropriate categories, and
do not publicize with a site more than once, as this only irritates the system
administrators, and will not help the visibility of your site.
Here are three places that have made it easy to publicize your site.
