CG Susie - PROLOGUE

As many of you know, I recently had to go to Northern California on business. Consequently, I packed a huge bag full of femme clothes and determined to have some fun. Thus armed, I made contact with two friends from aol-land and one old friend whom I hadn't seen since October and is like a dear sister to me.

I flew into San Francisco one morning, took a cab to where the deposition was and, when over, checked into a nice boutique hotel in downtown SF and waited for my good friend Janel to arrive.

Part I - Janel
(The Street(s) of San Francisco)

I hurriedly got dressed and waited expectantly for Janel to arrive. Soon there was a knock on the door and a very handsome gentleman stood outside the door. It was Janel, disguised as a guy!!! She had driven all the over from Oakland just to see me, do my make up and try on a few wigs. She came in and in about three minutes, we were giggling like long lost girlfriends and one of us would start a sentence and the other one would finish it. Talk about being on the same page! After visiting a while, I sat down and Janel began to pamper me like I was Queen of the Nile or something. Talk about luxury!!!

When she was done with my make up, she opened up her bag of wigs and did we have fun!! It was strange...while she was doing my make up, I watched her face, and I could observe Janel coming out. It was remarkable to watch. This girl is truly an artist and is absolutely one of the nicest people I have ever met in my whole life. I am soooo privileged to have her as a friend.

We tried on a slew of wigs and laughed until we almost choked. I tried on a variety of styles and colors. One of my favorites was what Janel called her "Oprah wig". It reminded me of Barbara Walters from about 20 years ago. Anyway, it is kind of a medium brown bouffant and very attractive. I guess everyone can pick their own media iconess to relate it to. I tried it on and LOVED how it looked!! Then I started laughing so hard I almost wet my panties. I had to tell Janel that I looked like some of the rich Jewish ladies who go shopping in Beverly Hills!!!! This is NOT a bad thing, by the way. Janel howled.

I offered to take her out to dinner (the least I could do!) but she had to get back across the bay to eat dinner at her Mom's house. I put my own wig back on and just couldn't stand the idea of staying in when I felt so...right. I asked if she would mind taking me for a stroll around the block before she left and she graciously consented. We got in the elevator and marched across the hotel lobby like we owned the place. (the desk clerk gaped, goggle eyed at us) Janel was in drab, and if I do say so myself, we made a nice looking couple. Then a deep breath, open the door and we were out on the sidewalk, right across from the old Mint building. I asked Janel if she would mind if I took her arm and she graciously assented. I took her arm and it was like electricity. I had never held anyone's arm like that before. We walked around the block...a long block and just chatted. We got a few stares, a few smiles, but for the most part, no one paid any attention to us.

When we got back to the hotel, Janel said good bye and went on her way. I can hardly wait to see her again. I went back to the room, but wasn't ready to go back to boy mode. No way! I was STARVING though and no room service for dinner at this hotel. I talked to Tanya Russo on the phone for a while and realized I had to get something to eat. I was scared. I took another deep breath and went downstairs and out again. I walked to a nearby Denny's hoping they would still be open. Construction workers were doing some work on Mission Street and I had to walk right past them. Most of them didn't even notice me, but a few ogled my legs. I was in a strange town, alone...in unfamiliar surroundings. I kept walking and fortunately, Denny's was open.

I got seated and ordered dinner with no problem. I was so hungry, I had to keep reminding myself, "Okay...eat like a lady. Don't just wolf down your food." I paid the bill, left a generous tip and walked back onto Mission. The construction workers were still at it and there numerous people leaving a nearby huge Movie-plex, plus assorted night owls.

I got back to the hotel and oh so reluctantly undressed. It was a magical evening, made possible by my wonderful sister, Janel. When I look at the photos from that night, they bring back one of my most treasured memories. How very fortunate I am!!!

PART II
Faith
(New Faces in the Big Valley)

I finished my business in the Bay Area on Friday just in time to hit rush hour traffic, but being an LA girl, I was used to this. I inched my way across the Altamont Pass and finally dropped down into the Central Valley. The Central Valley of California is combined by the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys. It is bordered by the Coast Range on the west, the Sierra Nevada's on the east and the Tehachapis on the south. It is still one of the most productive agricultural areas in the USA and maybe the world. I was looking forward to spending time with my good friend Faith (formerly LylaDenis1). I finally pulled into Stockton and was let in by Faith's room mate Ray. Ray showed my the ladies' room and the guest room and I got settled in and promptly fell asleep on the couch, waking up after Faith got home from work.

It was so good seeing my good friend again. Saturday, we spent quite a bit of time shopping for little gifts to bring to Tanya Russo and her family for our visit Sunday night (part iii). Like typical girls, much care and thought went into the gift selection, but we finally found what we wanted. Faith-made chile and cornbread for dinner and I must say it was excellent. Yes, girls, it has beans in it, but what can I say? Faith is one of those dayum yankees and doesn't know any better, but GOSH it was good! Gee, I'm getting hungry right now...

Well, I got ready and watched the Raiders/Patriots game with Ray while Faith got ready. (I hogged the ladies' room for a long time, shaving my legs). I wore my "cherry cola" cocktail dress with a new pair of wine colored pumps. Faith wore a classy and elegant black skirt, white blouse and black jacket. We drove to Sacramento to "Faces" a wonderful pub in the "lavender district". faces is well appointed and has several rooms plus two patios. In California, if you are close to the ocean, the weather is usually warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The inland valleys, on the other hand, are blistering in the summer and FUHREEEEZING in the winter. I was wearing one of my leopard skin coats, but it was too light to really ward off the chill. I was out on one of the patios smoking and a very lovely girl commented on my coat. I thanked her and said I really needed a fur coat. She laughed a delicious throaty laugh and said she had three. Each of her three husbands had bought her one and although she got rid of the husbands, she kept the coats. Makes sense to me. She said if I wanted a coat, just find a nice husband. Hmmm, as ANNOYING as men are, the thought did tempt for a while, just because of the cold.

"Faces" is kind of a generic gay place, so the crowd was rather eclectic as oppossed to being just tgs and admirers. there were numerous lesbians there in cowboy garb and many were cute!! Go ahead and rope me ma'am, but those spurs gotta go!! lol. one cool thing happened as we were trying to make our way into one of the other rooms was two of the "cowboys" wanted to go straight while I was turning left. We did the "after you" dance and one of the cowboys said, "ladies first" and gestured gallantly for me to proceed. I thanked him and proceeded.

As we sat enjoying the people watching, I noticed a stunning blonde gg who looked vaguely familiar. She looked like a stewardess on a lay over. About that time, Faith said, "Erika's here". Oh good I thought, I was hoping that Erika Fox Lovett would come by. I had met her in La several months previous.

"Where is she?" I asked.

"Over there," Faith pointed. OMG!! the blonde was Erika!! I only knew her as a brunette. I honestly thought she was a gg!!! She came and joined us and we visited a while. She looks good, but quite obviously there is an inner happiness welling up inside her that overflows her countenance with her inner beauty. It was great talking to her and she seemed pleased that someone from LA finally realized that I-5 runs both ways.

We found out that many of the girls were at some event but would be in another place later on. After a while, we put on our jackets and strode up the street to another place...I can't remember the name. The leopard skin coat, while not the warmest, is certainly a conversation piece. Several ggs during the evening asked if they could touch it! (note to Susan, wear that coat more often!) There were nice and beautiful girls there (although one had an ego the size of the space shuttle). The great thing about people like that is they are SOO good for comic relief!! Faith kept us all entertained with pointed, accurate and highly amusing comments in her own inimitable style. Faith's friends were nice, friendly and just sweethearts, one and all. I completely enjoyed the evening. I was "Ms Designated driver" so was sticking to diet cokes. Faith let her hair down a little with a drink or three. Guess who had the hangover the next day? Yep, the nice girl who drank cokes all night!!

It was another perfect evening. So far - two out of two! this is turning into a great trip!!! It was wonderful seeing my old friend again and we picked up right where we left off at Hope's wedding last October. I went to sleep about thirty seconds after my head hit the pillow...thinking of the trip to Tanya's.

PART III
Tanya
(The Three Amigas)

(Click thumbnail to view)

As I mentioned in Part II, I awoke with a splitting headache, like some sort of faux hangover. Faith, of course, was as chipper as woodchuck. There is no justice in this world. We decided that, since we would be checking into a motel, it would be easier to make the trip in drab. Amazing how those No Vacancy lights can suddenly go on. Faith called Tanya and got some directions. Tanya actually seemed just as exited about our visit as we were. I overheard Faith say, "Oh I don't know what we're wearing. Probably going for comfort."

"Comfort, my fanny!" I retorted, "I'm going for glamour!"

I could hear Tanya howling with laughter over the phone. We dithered around for an inordinate period and finally got on the road. Faith navigated an excellent route and almost before we knew it (we gabbed ALL the way) we were in Tanyaville, a small town north of San Francisco Bay. We spoke to Tanya on my cell phone the last few blocks and pulled into her driveway. I knew Tanya would look stunning and, of course, here's Faith and Sue looking like the "grunge brothers."

Tanya answered the door and yes, girls, she is even BETTER than her photos. She is just lovely. She was wearing a beautiful teal two piece dress. Faith, ever the diplomat said, "Gosh, you ARE tall!"

We came in and met the family, visited for a while and distributed our little gifts. For "rug rat" (RR) Faith purchased a little school bus with various riders. I opted for a SUV and a bass boat. RR seemed mightily pleased with both of our selections. Tanya's wife is a delightful woman with a wickedly off beat sense of humor. To protect their privacy, I will not provide her real name, but will call her KBE (killer blue eyes). KBE has an affinity for porpoises and seemed pleased with the Austrian Crystal porpoises I brought. Faith made the biggest hit with chocolate truffles (I think she had some inside info). I gave Tanya a set of pearl ear rings I had that never worked for me, but I felt they would look great on her. For the life of me, I can't remember what Faith got her, but it was very well received.

We were all a little nervous. You could feel it. I think it was because we all wanted to make a good impression, although the fact that Faith and I looked like San Quentin escapees or ax murderers might have had something to do with it. We were anxious to jettison the drab stuff and become our real selves, so we left to check into the motel and get ready. On the way, I noticed the rental car was about out of gas. There was a gas station on the opposite side of the road and I just decided, oh heck, I'll get gas on the way to Tanya's. We got dressed, Faith in a lovely black cocktail dress and me in my good ole red dress. We pulled out of the motel parking lot and I pulled into the Standard Station. I strode as calmly as I could to the attendant and gave him a 20. His eyes just about bugged out of his head and I don't think it was from seeing someone in a red cocktail dress in Tanyaville in early afternoon.

Not to be outdone, Faith pumped the gas and walked back to get the change. (Caramba! These gringa women are tall !!!) I wonder if the gas station guy is related to Sher's pizza man. We arrived back at Tanya's and soon the mutual nervousness began to abate. Tanya is quite reserved, but KBE is NOT! She speaks slowly and enunciates her words carefully and you quickly realize that if she is talking...shut UP! What she is saying is apt to be on point, humorous or both. Tanya prepared a lovely dinner of roast and all the trimmings and yumm it was good. I am not a fan of most vegetables, but her carrots were to die for!! Since Tanya and KBE don't really drink, I decided to forego the usual Moet & Chandon and brought some sparkling cider instead. I also brought a sugar free cherry pie. Faith brought some cider also. Tanya even stocked up on my favorite soft drink, diet Dr. Pepper. Hey! its those Southern roots. I know Jamie, Mallory, Julie, Dana and Keely can relate to that!

We spent the most wonderful evening gabbing and laughing and gabbing and laughing. I had to demonstrate how I distracted the construction workers (see Part II) in San Francisco. You need to imagine me in my long red dress, red pumps and pearl jewelry standing up pretending to work a jack hammer in Tanya's living room. One of the evening's highlights was when KBE told some stories of her youthful hi-jinks and ended with the statement that she was really a "rebellious little snot". This struck us all funny and I laughed until my tummy hurt. This was not femme laughter either, but a real guffawing horse laugh. I almost used "RLS" for her story nickname, but felt KBE was a little more descriptive.

While Faith and KBE were comparing computer game lore, Tanya showed me her wardrobe. I was struck again with the absolute exquisite taste she has. Faith's down to earth simplicity and just plain goodness did much to dissipate the remaining nervousness and soon we like four old friends together for a college reunion. It finally got late enough that I felt I had a choice. Go to sleep in the next 20 minutes either in the hotel bed or on Tanya's sofa. An interesting tableau was, as the night wore on and we became comfortable, Tanya's floor was littered with shoes. Two pairs of black pumps and one pair of red ones. KBE kept hers on, of course she was wearing tennies. We most reluctantly said good evening and headed back to the motel. Faith and I gabbed for an hour or so and drifted off to sleep.

I had to meet with clients the next day and reluctantly opted to stay in drab, not wishing vestiges of mascara or nail polish to be noticed. The "grunge bros + one decided to visit the local mall. Tanya can do grunge too, believe it or not. Honest! I swear! Tanya decided to get her ears pierced at the mall. I don't mind shots myself, but I cannot stand to watch it and decided ear piercing was close enough to a vaccination that having one of the grunge bros faint or throw up would do little for the ear piercing ambiance. I nosed around in the book store until they were done. We did a little shopping and I saw a gorgeous red suit with fur cuffs and collar in one of the stores, on sale. Thank God, they didn't have it in my size!!

We drove back to Tanya's and I left for my meeting, which, of course took an hour and a half longer than I thought. Hey I billed for it though! I asked them not to wait dinner for me, but Tanya saved me plenty. She took the left over roast and made killer tacos!! Oh boy, were they good!! RR is amazing. That kid can make a tortilla disappear faster than David Copperfield! Woo hoo, Tanya and KBE, wait until he's 15.

A touching moment came when Tanya gave me a whole bunch of her old clip on ear rings. I thought, "perfect timing, Sue. you give her clip ons right before she gets her ears pierced". Tanya said she would keep them and treasure them. I honestly think the simple large pearls will look good on her, clip ons or not. She had two pairs of the hoops that are spring loaded so they look like pierced ear hoops - a small pair and a larger pair that she calls the "whore hoops". She has exquisite taste and I actually doubled my ear ring collection with all of her old ear rings. I can hardly wait to wear all of them and I will treasure them always. Faith gave me a pair of her grandmother's diamond ear rings which brought a few words to mind...namely "black evening gown". I have a formal affair to go to in March and those ear rings will be perfect.

We most reluctantly said good-bye and I know we will have more get-togethers. Tanya and KBE are our good friends now, r/t, and I cannot wait to the next visit to Tanyaville. I'm sure KBE is asking, "Why doesn't she call it KBEville?" LOL ... and maybe I should. It was a long drive back and a long flight home... but oh the wonderful memories. Janel, Faith, Tanya, KBE...even RR. I almost cried when I knew it was getting close to being over.

EPILOGUE

No, Mallory, this isn't something you shave your legs with. When I got home, I unpacked. Each article of clothing evoked a pleasant memory. The glamorous leopard skin coat I wore in SF, the wine colored pumps I wore in Sacramento, the box of ear rings from my precious friend Tanya. I touched and held each ear ring, thinking of her and KBE as I placed them in my now overflowing jewelry box. I held Faith's diamond ear rings up, letting the facets catch the light. Are they real? I don't know and I don't care. My friend is real and they are a marvelous gift, THAT is what's real.

Is there a point to all of this? Yes, there is. Don't sit there hiding behind your computer keyboard forever. Sure it is a wonderful tool for meeting people. It is NOT a substitute for meeting people, however. Be safe, be intelligent, use discretion, but get together and be friends, all of you!!! I don't care if you're tses, cds or ggs...we need each other. Get to know people and then meet them when you are completely convinced they are not nut cases. Well, poor choice of words, we're probably all nut cases, but you know what I mean.

Don't be afraid to go out dressed as who you are. Sure, be careful, pick the right spots, but get out there. Quit worrying about "passing". Look at my pictures. Do you think I pass? Of course I don't. Sometimes, on a good day and from a distance I might briefly, but I simply do not pass that well. However, I AM accepted as female most places I go. You will too, if you give it a chance. Its worth it.

Thank you, each and every one of you for reading these things and for your kind comments and encouragement. Thank you all of our TS sisters who live this everyday and don't really have that safe male persona to run behind anymore. Thank you all of our gg friends who give us so much support, love and encouragement...our interpreters as we travel in this strange land of gender. Finally thank you all of my wonderful cd sisters. Each of you has touched me in some way and you are all so important to me. I love you all...each and everyone.
